"What is photography? I'd like to answer that question with a picture! For me, it's a way to express my reaction to a given situation at a given moment, and simultaneously a way to experience the pleasure of creating an image that satisfies the senses and enlightens thought. The rest is physics."
João Costa (Funcho)

João (Manuel Abranches Martins) Costa was born in 1951 in Viana do Castelo, Portugal and arrived in Mozambique with his parents in the first year of his life. His father was an officer in the Portuguese Army; his oriental characteristics are attributable to his half-Japanese mother, his friends called him 'Funcho'.

He studied engineering at the University of LM from 1969 to 1974, where he documented revolutionary activities and became active in the University's student photographic club 'Associação Academica de Fotografia'. From 1972 to 1977 he worked as a photographer for 'Voz de Moçambique', as a medical photographer at the University, and finally at 'Notícias'. From 1978 to 1979 he completed a training course at the National Institute for Cinema as a lighting cameraman. Funcho has since worked on many award-winning short- and feature-length videos and films, as a cameraman and director of photography. He lives and works in Maputo, and occasionally freelances as a photographer.
